THE entrance to Chequers Court from Huntingdon High Street will be opened up on Sunday, when the bridge link between Bakers Oven and the former Threshers store will be demolished.
Pedestrians will have to make a detour for the day while the work goes on.
Howard White, associate director of developers Churchmanor Estates, said: "To remove such a large concrete slab is a huge task, and we obviously wish to ensure that the works are carried out in as safe an environment as possible, as well as causing the least inconvenience possible to both shoppers and retailers.
"Signage will be provided, directing pedestrians through Newtons Court to ensure that access will be provided from the High Street to St Germain Walk at all times.
"We are confident that the end result will be of significant benefit to this end of the High Street, by removing a dark and now very dated structure."
The work is part of the first phase of redevelopment of Chequers Court, which will see new shops built where the former Threshers off-licence used to be.
The second phase, for which detailed plans have yet to be developed, will replace the government offices and shops at the north side of the court with larger shops and additional car parking.
