ARE all the parents whose children attend St Ivo School aware that the lollipop man does not work in the afternoons any more, and the children are left to see themselves across the dangerous Houghton Road?
I telephoned the Cambridgeshire council to ask why this is, and was told that "the lollipop man works mornings only now, and we had to compromise or lose him altogether, and that national guidelines state that patrols do not work any more". He went on to say that "there is not a lot more we can do apart from sending leaflets to the school telling the pupils how to conduct themselves when crossing".
I witnessed a very young pupil from the Ivo running across Houghton Road at the crossing on a red light. Huge lorries were approaching him from each direction and sounded their very loud horns: he was very lucky that he made it across the road without tripping. What good would reading him any leaflets do?
Perhaps, if enough parents telephoned Andy Swallow in the county council road safety department on 01223 717970 to complain, the lollipop man might get his job back full time.
