I DON'T understand the accusation of jingoism about the proposed Oliver Cromwell flag (Letters, June 20). Let's not forget that, if it weren't for the sacrifices Cromwell made, we would still be subject to the divine right of kings.
Let us also remember that Cromwell, with all his faults, was responsible for the birth of democracy in the western world.
We would be living in a very different Britain today if it had not been for the likes of Oliver Cromwell, most probably a world where freedom of speech is not as prevalent as it is today, and where letters written by the likes of Richard Storey would not even be entertained, let alone published.
