THE inquest has now been held into the tragic death of Warren Hay. The coroner said he shared the family's distress about "the dangers facing pedestrians crossing the A141".
Cambridgeshire County Council's proposal to ban right turns (at a cost of £160,000) does little to protect those who simply wish to cross the A141 on foot. What is needed is a light-controlled crossing. We are told this costs more.
At the time of the original planning permission in 1993, Huntingdonshire District Council explicitly removed the requirement for safety measures suggested by the county council.
Last year, the district council received a largely unexpected surplus of over £2million. This was added to reserves. I believe that agreement by the district council to fund the gap between the current irrelevant proposal and a light-controlled crossing would be well received by the 12,000 people who signed the petition calling for a safe means of crossing the A141.
