CHILDREN in Huntingdonshire celebrated the Chinese New Year in style by dressing up in a variety of spectacular costumes. The year of the Rat, which is associated with aggression, wealth and charm, started on Thursday.
At the Ladybird Day Nursery in Fenstanton, children took part in a host of activities related to Chinese culture and the new year festival. Children made moon biscuits and Chinese dumplings and also tried their hands at making dragon puppets and Chinese lanterns.
Nursery manager Mary Crosby said: "We have a Chinese member of staff at the nursery so the children had to opportunity to see their names written in Chinese. Embracing new cultures is an important part of a child's development."
At Stukeley Meadows Primary School, Year 1 pupils helped make a Chinese dragon using craft materials as they celebrated the new year. And at the Hansel and Gretel pre-school in Huntingdon, children wore red and yellow clothing and took part in activities with a yellow or red theme as well as making lanterns and masks, and dancing with a dragon.
