HUNTINGDON gymnast Louis Smith has made Olympic history.
The 19-year-old has become the first male British gymnast to claim an Olympic medal in a specialist piece of equipment.
Having qualified for the pommel horse final in fifth position, Smith turned in the most difficult routine of eight finalists to earn the bronze medal.
And Smith was only denied the silver medal on count back when Croatian Filip Ude matched his score of 15.725 in Beijing.
Smith, from Eye, near Peterborough, trains at the Huntingdon Olympic Gymnastics Club in Clayton's Way, under the stewardship of Paul Hall.
After his performance, Smith said: "It is unbelievable. I'm speechless. I hope this will be a stepping stone for British gymnastics.
