I WAS intrigued by the letter (July 16) in which your correspondent commented on the apparent outbreak of some form of sleeping sickness. I too have suffered from this malaise, and there are a couple of explanations that I can put forward.
First, unrefreshing sleep is a sign of depression. I have been clinically depressed ever since the current Government came into power, although I never realised the correlation until now. However it is possible that the current economic climate has caused ever more people to become depressed.
More likely is the fact that people who have never had hay fever are reporting that they are suffering from it this year. If they are taking antihistamines to which they are not used, or are taking the wrong type, this could be making them drowsy.
