NINETEEN-year-old Sam Kemp made history on Friday by becoming the first teenager to be elected a member of Huntingdonshire District Council.

Barely one in four electors voted in Huntingdon North Ward, but that was enough for Liberal Democrat Sam to remove the sitting Conservative Maggie Wheeler by a majority of 19 votes.

Sam was elected with 376 of the 3,678 available votes, supported by barely 10 per cent of the electorate. Maggie Wheeler polled 357, with Labour veteran Ann Beevor on 202 and the Greens' John Clare a poor fourth with 62.

It was only the second time in the 33-year history of HDC that the Lib Dems had won a seat in the town - David Priestman was the first a year ago.

The win made up for losing Diana Collins's Eynesbury seat to Tory Paul Ursell by more than 100 votes. The BNP's Nicholas Smith pushed Labour into fourth place.

The Lib Dems were further boosted by winning two seats on Huntingdon Town Council, their first ever, said party leader Peter Downes.
