Experience one of the Bard’s greatest masterpieces on a historic Huntingdon stage.

Theatre company Shakespeare at the George will return to the courtyard at The George Hotel, on George Street, from June 24 to July 5, where they will give a performance of The Merchant of Venice.

It is one of Shakespeare’s most powerful plays – featuring the famous courtroom scene focused on the debt of a pound of flesh owed by the merchant Antonio to one of Shakespeare’s most well-known characters, Shylock the money-lender.

It encompasses love, loss and prejudice, and the consequences of when the oppressed becomes the oppressor in a captivating dramatic piece.

SatG’s production has also been selected as one of the 86 amateur theatre companies in the UK to take part in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Open Stages project.

Part of a commitment to transform the relationship between amateur and professional theatres, the group has received training, director mentoring, feedback and support from professional RSC directors in Stratford-upon-Avon.

In addition, they are making the play more accessible by providing a captioned performance of their production for the first time.

They will become only the second amateur company in the country to offer this facility for an open-air Shakespeare production, providing people who are hard of hearing with the opportunity to enjoy live theatre in the unique setting of the George’s Jacobean courtyard.

Expect edge-of-your-seat tension as Shylock, hell-bent on vengeance, demands a pound of Antonio’s flesh.

The Hunts Post has a pair of tickets to give away to the captioned performance on July 1.

To stand a chance of winning, just tell us who played Shylock in the 2004 film version of The Merchant of Venice.

Answers on a postcard or sealed envelope to The Hunts Post, 30 High Street, Huntingdon, PE29 3TB.

Closing date is Wednesday, June 25.

INFORMATION: Shows start at 7.30pm, with no performance on June 29. Tickets cost £11 or £13, with £10 tickets for the first night, June 24. For more information visit www.satg.org.uk.
