St Neots man Joss Williams is preparing to face one of the toughest challenges in sport this Saturday.

The 37 year-old father of two, lines up in the Ironman World Championship event in Hawaii – a formidable test featuring a 2.4 mile swim, a 112-mile cycle and a full 26.2 mile marathon.

Williams is a newcomer to the discipline after only tackling his first Ironman event a year ago. He booked his World Championship place in a Swedish qualifier earlier in the year when finishing sixth in his age group in a total time of 9:26.14.

Williams, who fits in 15-20 hours of training each week around his job as a project manager, said: “Ironman is more of a mental challenge than a physical one – especially during the last 15 or so miles of the marathon when it starts to get really tough!

“I’m really proud to be competing at the World Championships. I’m also humbled with the support I’ve received from some fantastic sponsors and the local community.”

Williams, who had to fund his participation in the event, has been in Hawaii since last week to acclimatise to the hot and humid conditions ahead of the race.

He has been backed by local businesses Arcade UK and Keystone Marketing as well as receiving support from independent health and beauty brand, Treacle Moon, along with his nutrition sponsor, Torq, and kit supplier, Highline.
