Huntingdon Gymnastics Club will have four of its members representing their countries at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer.

The English Gymnastics Association has confirmed that triple Olympic medallist Louis Smith will make up part of a five-man England squad – his first major team event since the London Olympics in 2012.

The selection comes following Smith’s announcement in January that he was making a comeback and had “unfinished business” in the gymnastics world:

Smith said: “I’m so pleased to have been given this opportunity to represent England, and to have a chance to prove that I can still compete with some of the best gymnasts in the world.

“I have fond memories of the Commonwealth Games, having taken gold on pommel horse in Melbourne in 2006 and it’s going to be fantastic to be able to sample the unique atmosphere of the friendly games once again. I’m looking forward to a great competition.”

Club mate Daniel Keatings will represent Scotland while Cameron Mackenzie will compete for South Africa, and Luke Carsonhas been selected for Northern Ireland.

Huntingdon head coach Paul Hall added: “This is a fantastic result for the four guys and for Huntingdon Gymnastics Club.

“We have had club representation at the last four games and this continues a tradition of providing world class athletes capable of winning medals at the highest of levels.

“I’m especially looking forward to the potential of a pommel horse final that could see a clash of three of the world’s best exponents – Olympic medallists Max Whitlock and Louis Smith, and former European champion Daniel Keatings.”

The gymnasts will join their respective training camps for final preparations before travelling to Glasgow at the end of July.
