It was a busy Easter weekend for Louis Smith and Dan Keatings with the gymnasts travelling to separate continents as part of their European and Commonwealth selection campaigns – and returning home with medals.
Smith, 24, won gold on the pommel horse at his World Cup event in Seoul, South Korea, while 23-year-old Keatings was part of the silver-medal winning four-man Great Britain team competing in Sao Paolo, Brazil, and won individual golds on both the pommel horse and parallel bars.
Smith, who is aiming for a place in England’s Commonwealth Games squad, said: “I’m very pleased with my performance after 18 months out of international competition. I’ve now scored some of the highest marks on pommels at three consecutive events and it feels good to be able to fight for medals with some of the best in the world.”
Meanwhile, two young ladies from Huntingdon Gym Club have also announced their arrival on the international stage. Tilly Allen and Lottie Smith, who are both 13, have been selected to represent England as a part of the 2014-15 squad following good performances at the English Championships in March.
Coach Paul Hall said: “The girls train more than 20 hours at the club a week. Selection for the England junior squad is a significant achievement for them. They hope to follow in the footsteps of former Huntingdon gymnasts Lisa Mason and Marissa King.”
