Eynesbury Rovers won promotion to Step 5 after 13 years in Division One of the United Counties League last night with a 4-1 win at home to Raunds Town – and all four of their goals were scored by the magnificent Tom Coles.
The club won their 10th game on the spin to secure second place behind Oadby Town with one game of the season remaining, and now they will go to Northampton Spencer on Saturday without the pressure of recent expectation.
Joint manager Martin Field was delighted, but did need to have ‘a few words’ with his players when a nervy first half saw them go in at half time drawing 1-1.
“There were heads on the floor,” said Field. “But we had a few words and in the second half they went and did the job. This is a team game – but Tommy Coles, last night, seriously wow.
“I told Tom he was serious different class. He is the best at heading a football I have worked with in the game. I told him if he had the feet to go with his head he would be real quality!”
Coles was indeed dominant in the air, though his first goal came when he broke through the Raunds defence and chipped the goalkeeper. But the visitors pulled a goal back from the penalty spot following a handball in the Eynesbury area and it was all square at half time.
Rovers still looked nervy for the opening minutes of the second half but a towering header from Coles, who beat the goalkeeper to a high corner, made it 2-1. The midfielder completed his hat-trick with a confident strike and his fourth goal - a wonderful diving header from the back post - came late on to put the rubber stamp on his team’s promotion.
Field stood apart from his players while they collected their runners-up medals from Michael Vincent, owner of ChromaSport & Trophies, the sponsors of the UCL. He wanted them to enjoy the moment.
He said: “I am pleased for everyone at the club. This club should be playing at step 4 and now next season it will be. We can now go to Northampton Spencer on Saturday, relax, and enjoy our day.”
