Godmanchester Rovers player-boss Chris Hyem believes he has made the perfect capture.

Hyem has drafted in former St Neots Town manager Andy Davies as his number two.

Davies, a highly-respected and highly-qualified coach, put the Rovers players through their paces in training during last week.

And Davies, who stepped down as Saints boss in December after almost a year in temporary and permanent charge, appears to have had an instant impact after Hyem’s

side ended a six-game wait for a win last Saturday.

They beat Haverhill Rovers 2-0 at the David Wilson Homes Ground courtesy of first-half goals from Tom Spark and Joe Furness.

Hyem said: “Andy is a great capture for the club. He is a very good coach and it will be brilliant for myself and the players to have the opportunity to learn from him.

“He took his first session on Wednesday night last week and immediately had the lads buzzing.

“He wants them to be able to play with freedom as long as they react in the right way when making mistakes.

“We showed a lot of quality and discipline on Saturday to get ourselves ahead and then hold onto the advantage when Haverhill put us under lots of pressure in the

second half.

“I was critical of the lads before the game and this was a good response from them.

“We desperately needed that result as we were sliding down the table. Hopefully it can now be the start of a decent run.”

Victory lifted Rovers up to 13th place in the Premier Division standings and carried them eight points clear of the relegation zone.

They are back on home turf this Saturday when entertaining Long Melford – a team level with them in the table – at the David Wilson Homes Ground.
