Houghton & Wyton have pulled off the signing of a player who made more than 300 professional appearances and earned an international cap.

Left-back Tom Williams, who enjoyed an extensive Football League career and played once for Cyprus, has been tempted to join the Cambs League Division 1B side.

Williams is a close friend of Houghton & Wyton player Adam Spratt and is also known to joint player-boss Jon Brierley from his time in the Peterborough area.

The 37 year-old most recently played in America for Arizona United and is understood to be hopeful of securing a new deal in the States next year.

Brierley said: “I’ve known Tom for years since his time at Posh and we’ve always stayed in touch. He’s also a close friend of Adam and he’s going travel up to our games with him.

“Tom is looking for a few games and we jumped at the chance to get him on board. I’m sure all the lads will really benefit from having him involved, and he will be quality for us on and off the pitch.

“But there will be no special treatment - we’re a small club and everyone pays subs!”

Williams was a product of the West Ham youth system and went on to represent Posh, Birmingham, QPR, Barnsley, Gillingham, Swansea, Wycombe, Preston, Bristol City, Colchester, Walsall and Notts County in the professional game.

He is likely to feature for Houghton & Wyton, who have won their only game so far this season, when they entertain Hemingfords United Reserves in a Division 1B derby this Saturday.

Alconbury are the early pacesetters in Division 1B. Striker Kristien Strickson-Head has started the campaign in free-scoring form with five goals in two games.

His double earned a 2-1 success at Chatteris Town Reserves for Mick Clarke’s side last Saturday.

Sam Phillips and Josh Turner struck as AFC Barley Mow collected a first win at this level when seeing off Fordham 2-0, while five different scorers helped Eaton Socon Reserves win 5-3 at Hemingfords United Reserves. Luke Fox, Charlie Gough, Tom Hall, Sam Ward and sub Jason Chapman found the net.
