The 66-year-old Huntingdonshire Athletics Club runner clocked up his final miles by taking part in the three-race Barbabos Half Marathon series on the Caribbean Island. Then, he told The Hunts Post, he would enjoy the remainder of his holiday by “doing some walking and a little running”.

Whitehead, who lives in Houghton, said: “It’s been very tough at times, particularly on the cold wet mornings and evenings in the UK – and I must thank all the Hunts AC folks who encouraged me to keep going.”

The Barbabos Half Marathon comprises of three races over one weekend with a one-mile race on the Friday to ease you in gently. On the Saturday there is a 10k before Sunday’s climax, the 13.1 mile half marathon.

“The first two races went well although the 10k was very hot. It was 29C at the start but after half way the sun had gone down and the return route included the town centre of Bridgetown.

“The half marathon meant I had to get up at 3am and although the start was cool the temperature increased after the half way turn back.

“The race had several hundred runners including athletes from other islands. There was great local support despite the early start. From mile eight the route has a long downhill to the harbour and back towards the town and Independence Bridge and finishes by one of the lovely beaches. By then it was really hot and I was exhausted and very pleased to have finished.”

To achieve his target of 2013 miles in 2013, Whitehead had to run every day for the 60 days leading up to the trip to the Barbados. He was running more than 100 miles a week and actually peaked at a high of 114 over one seven-day period.

Hunts AC’s vice chairman Wayne DuBose said: “It’s an astonishing achievement – but there are no plans for 2014 miles next year.”
