It’s not often a haircut draws a crowd but that’s what happened last week when teenager Rosie Moss went for a “severe” trim.

The 15-year-old is now sporting something closer to a bald look after taking the bold move to sacrifice her hair and raise funds for two good causes close to her heart.

Rosie, of High Leys, St Ives, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) aged just two and went through two and a half years of treatment, including chemotherapy.

The St Ivo pupil, who is about to sit her GCSEs, was inspired to do some fundraising after hearing that her best friend Aimee Green’s mum had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Two of Rosie’s mum Sarah’s colleagues at Cambridgeshire Registration Service are also fighting forms of the disease.

She decided she would have her head shaved and the only question mark was when, as the St Ivo prom is in June.

Mrs Moss said: “A lot of her friends said don’t do it until after the prom but her take was if she had cancer and lost her hair she wouldn’t be able to choose when it happened.”

So on Thursday (May 8), watched by a large group of friends, including Aimee, Rosie had her charity chop at Jonquil in Kings Hedges, St Ives.

And Mrs Moss said her daughter’s new look was amazing: “It really suits her,” she added. “And the proms at the end of June, so she’ll have six weeks of hair by then.”

The money raised - more than £1,400 so far - will be divided between Macmillan Cancer Support and the Ellenor Lions Hospice in Kent, whose nurses helped care for Rosie during her illness.
