The Hunts Post’s charity bike ride, Two Wheels for Woodlands, could help push the Woodlands Cancer Centre three quarters of the way to its £800,000 target.
More than 540 cyclists rode around Huntingdonshire on June 29 raising money for the cancer unit at Hinchingbrooke Hospital, which is in need of an extension to provide care for more patients.
The ride itself has raised about £6,000 but sponsorship money from riders has added about another £3,000.
So far Huntingdonshire has clubbed together to raise more than £590,000, so the Two Wheels money could push the Woodlands fundraising over £600,000.
Robert Proud, 60, rode 70 miles on the day and the Burton Brothers garage service manager in Ramsey raised £1,400 in the process. He said: “For the last two years I have got into cycling. I was 60 in January so I thought I would go for the 60 miles, though it turned out to be 70.
“I have worked at the garage for 33 years and we lost one of our bosses a few years ago to cancer so that’s also why I took part. We also helped raise money for a scanner at Huntingdon and at Peterborough.”
He added: “I have been absolutely gobsmacked by how much money the customers at Burtons have donated. When people heard I was doing it on the grapevine, they would come in and put in £5, £10, or £20 in the pot. They were fantastic.
“I also found out that one of my customers is currently being treated at Woodlands. He stayed in the car while his wife dropped in a cheque for £50. It was heartbreaking to go out to the car and thank him for the donation.”
We can’t name everyone who has sent in sponsorship as there are just too many, but Alan Curtis, of Redwell Close, St Ives, sponsored his son-in-law Andy Braddock who cycled the 100 mile route £50, staff at Luminus raised £200, Daniel Cook raised £205 in the 30-mile ride, ‘Team Michael Owen-Smith’ raised £1,330 and Mark Martin, of Temple Close, Huntingdon, raised £50.
