Godmanchester residents have been warned to stay away from the Judith’s Field recreation area after a group of travellers set up camp there.
The town council said it was taking action and did not want the situation to be aggravated further.
Caravans arrived at the site which has a sports field, play area and a community building yesterday (Tuesday).
A statement from the council said: “Godmanchester Town Council is aware that there is an unlawful encampment in the town and is dealing with the situation in conjunction with the police and local authorities.
“They have advised residents that the site which is occupied, Judith’s Field, is closed until further notice - this applies to the play areas, grassed areas, car parks and buildings.
“Once the encampment has left, the town council will need to ensure the site is clean and safe before re-opening it.”
The statement added: “The town council will move as quickly as possible to re-open all facilities.
“In the meantime they are asking the public to stay away from the area.”
Residents posting on a community Facebook page claimed to have heard gunshots during the night – although others thought it was fireworks – and there were complaints of being disturbed by vehicles spinning their wheels in the area of the recreation field.
