A St Ives scout group could be on the move as part of plans to create a community and sports hub.

Gateway Scout Group will discuss plans for a new building at the St Ives Outdoor Centre, in California Road on Tuesday (April 29), after being offered a plot of land between the centre and the tennis court by Huntingdonshire District Council (HDC).

The group is currently split between two venues – beavers at the Copley Centre and cubs and scouts sharing the 2nd St Ives Sea Scouts hut on Holt Island.

John Vickery, group scout leader, told The Hunts Post: “It’s a very positive proposal from the district council and we hope we can build a community sports hub in the north of town that can house all three groups.”

Mr Vickery said if the idea were to get approval next week, a building could be in place in about a year.

“We have some money from the sale of our old place which we will be able to use,” he added. “It probably won’t cover all the cost as we will have to carry out some landscaping, so we will probably do some fundraising.”

HDC leader Councillor Jason Ablewhite said the council was keen to support community groups and would give the scouts a long-term lease on a peppercorn rent.
