Plans for the controversial development of Langley Court, St Ives, have been submitted to Huntingdonshire District Council.

Social landlord Luminus announced last July it had secured £2.3million from the Homes and Communities Association to demolish the current bedsits and flats, and replace them with an extra-care facility.

Luminus’s announcement was met with anger from the existing residents who faced being evicted. They took their fight to HDC and Cambridgeshire County Council but were eventually defeated in November, when HDC’s cabinet agreed to loan Luminus the additional £5m it needed to build the extra-care facility.

The new building will have 47 one-bedroom and eight two-bedroom units creating room for 63 residents as well as a lounge, library, hairdresser, IT suite and meeting rooms. It will also have a covered atrium.

A report included in the planning application states: “We feel the proposals will provide high living standards to the residents in an inspiring environment connected to the community and promoting a number of activities focused on the residents’ well-being.”

Currently there are 24 people still living at Langley Court with 16 due to move out in February.

A public consultation about the plans runs until February 13.
