HALF a dozen hens from Godmanchester-based animal charity have found new place to rest their feathers at the Cirencester home of flamboyant interior designer Laurence Llewellyn-Bowen.

Laurence, best known for his appearances on the BBC’s Changing Rooms, and wife Jackie, decided to adopt the former battery hens after hearing about their plight in a campaign run by mobile operator giff-gaff.

Laurence said: “We are both very pleased to have given them such a lovely, happy home and their egg yolks are getting a lovely golden colour now with all the corn and goodies they keep eating.”

Field welfare manager Debbie Wild said: “Although new regulations which came into force on January 1, mean chicken farmers must not keep more than 90 birds in a cage with at least 750 square centimetres of space for each bird, we know free-range chickens like these will have a much better quality of life and in turn produce better eggs for their owners.”
