Tories set to choose new police candidate this week

CAMBRIDGESHIRE Conservatives are expected to decide on Friday on their replacement candidate for Cambridgeshire’s first Police and Crime Commissioner after the previous nominee refused to join the party.
Retired Air Commodore John Pye stood down after pressure from the county’s rank and file party members, meaning the Tories have to re-run the hustings before the end of the week.
The principal unsuccessful candidates from the previous round – former county council leader Shona Johnstone, Sir Graham Bright, a former parliamentary private secretary to then Prime Minister Sir John Major in the 1990s, and Huntingdonshire cabinet member Darren Tysoe - are expected to contest the run-off on Friday evening.
Mrs Johnstone, who confirmed her candidature this afternoon, told The Hunts Post that her recent conviction for careless cycling - which she is expected to appeal - would not be a bar to her resumed candidature.
