THE ST Ives section of the Guided Busway will not open ahead of the southern section, Cambridgeshire County Council has confirmed.

The delays to the opening of the massively over budget busway may have left taxpayers and potential bus passengers frustrated, but it now gives us the chance to play ‘Guess the Opening Date’.

The rules are simple: we want you to send us your estimated opening date for the Guided Bus - the day the first paying passengers are allowed to use the service between St Ives and Cambridge city centre (excluding the southern section).

Readers are should send in two guesses (just in case your first choice has already been taken).

Things to keep in mind:

BAM Nuttall is suggesting it will finish the work on December 17

The county council is unsure the above date is achievable

The contract states CCC must wait six weeks after the busway has been handed over before doing any work on the project

The busway will need to be tested

Some of the testing could take place while work is carried out

As with most engineering contracts, staff get two weeks off at Christmas

The winner will receive...a bus pass to use on the Guided Bus for a month.

  • Just face the fact that the railway should have been retained with a promise to look at tramtrains to gain access to Cambridge. Better, more attractive, and environmentally superior. Guided bus was found to be in error by Essen in Germany a quarter of a century ago.

  • What was anyone thinking? A guided bus way! Why not just build a road with those up and down automatic posts to restrict access? At least then buses could overtake obstacles (broken down bus) if necessary; there would be no need for a service road; it could be used to alleviate the A14 if necessary; it would have been vastly cheaper. I wonder why everyone else has built tramways or light rail solutions?

  • I would love to use it. I hate the A14 in autumnwinter it takes ages to do the 12 mile journey into work. This direct route from St.Ives to Histon would be fantastic for me. I am so annoyedfrustrated at what has happened. On the up side, I've been cycling to work these past few months (with the help of a bike from the CTW scheme) and the busway bit makes for a fantastic smooth ride, if a little bit puncture prone. If only they could fix the busway and actually provide a decent tarmaced cycle path this would be a brilliant route. Surely that's not too much to ask for?

  • Who cares......none of us wanted it or are ever going to use it, the cash would have been better spent reducing congestion by various initiatives.....plus putting more weight behind any A14 improvements...which they HAVE NOT done.....
