When estate agent Simon Bradbury was persuaded to compete in an Olympic distance triathlon, he swore it would be a one-off – he would complete the challenge and return to his cigars and wine.

But it seems the 52-year-old cannot say no to a challenge after his Gadget Show presenter brother, Jason, suggested they take part in an even tougher race – an ironman competition.

Simon, a partner at Thomas Morris estate agents, led a healthier lifestyle as he dedicated himself to competing in the triathlon with his brother. He completed the race – 1.5km open-water swim, a 40km bike ride and a 10km run – in London in 3h 29m while Jason, a seasoned triathlete, finished in 2h 42m.

“I am still in a state of surprise,” Simon told The Hunts Post. “We have managed to raise nearly £4,000 for Magpas which I am delighted about. The triathlon is the largest in the world and the crowd was amazing. Whenever your body felt like it couldn’t take any more, the crowd cheered you on and that kept you going.”

The Bradbury brothers were joined by their other brother, Richard, for the triathlon at the ExCeL Centre in London on August 3.

Simon added: “I said I was going to have a large bottle of Chablis and a cigar waiting for me when I finished. I haven’t gone back to my smoking but I have gone back to the alcohol.

“The thing that will make you laugh though is that my brother has now challenged me to do an ironman ... which I’ve accepted. I think it is a huge thing to do something like that so it’s going to be special.”

The ironman will take place in Bolton on July 19 next year with competitors facing a gruelling 3.9km (2.4m) swim, 180km (112m) bike ride and a marathon distance run to finish.
