HIGHWAYS bosses say a Somersham road closed after a collision between a car and tractor will not be reopened until repairs to the carriageway have been carried out.

St Ives Road was closed following the crash, just before 1pm on Wednesday. However, Cambridgeshire County Council’s Highways Department said it would remain closed until resurfacing work, due to be carried out on Friday morning, had been completed.

A spokesman for the council said the decision was taken so as not to “confuse” drivers by reopening the road and then closing it again.

Fire crews from St Ives and Chatteris were called to the crash at 12.58pm and used specialist cutting equipment to free one casualty trapped in the car. Although the air ambulance had been called to the scene, the patient, believed to be an elderly woman, was taken by land ambulance to Hinchingbrooke Hospital for treatment.

The county council spokesman apologised for any inconvenience caused by the road’s closure and said: “Safety has to come first.”
