THE fiancee of a Huntingdon town councillor who died on a diving trip earlier this year is seeking election to his vacant seat.

Marion Nightingale is standing as the Conservative candidate in the Huntingdon East ward by-election.

John Skerry, 54, had held the seat until his death during a diving trip with the St Ives Sub-Aqua Club in Ardmucknish Bay, Oban, on May 15.

The pair were due to marry the following Saturday.

The former midwife, of Nursery Road, Huntingdon, said her reason for standing was to continue the excellent work of her fiance.

“I am passionate about continuing John’s vision of making Huntingdon a better place for people to live and work,” she told The Hunts Post. “I want Huntingdon Town Council to continue to deliver good quality services that are value for money, especially during these difficult times.”

Mr Skerry, who was a director of V J Skerry Limited, in Huntingdon High Street, was key in helping to get Huntingdon Town Hall refurbished and repaired, ready for the return for the town council’s official headquarters in the spring (there’s a chance to see inside the building, See Page 22.)

INFORMATION: Other candidates standing in the by-election, which takes place on Thursday, September 13, include Robert Pugh (Labour), Trish Shrapnel (Lib Dem) and Derek Norman (UKIP).
