Papworth Hospital’s move to Cambridge has stalled after a review of the plan was ordered by the Government.

Work on building a new 310-bed home on the biomedical campus next to Addenbrooke’s Hospital was due to start this autumn. After years of talks, the proposal was so far forward that Skanska had been chosen to lead the consortium to design, build and maintain it.

An artist’s impression of how the new hospital would look was released in December and it was hoped construction would be finished by 2017.

The Department of Health was said to have cleared the business case for the move and it had been passed to The Treasury for approval.

But Papworth Hospital chief executive Stephen Bridge has revealed the Government wrote just before Christmas to say it wanted to look at the plans again.

One suggestion is that Papworth could move some or all of its services to Peterborough, where the hospital is run by the Peterborough and Stamford NHS Foundation, and has a deficit worth about £38million.

It is the subject of a five-year rescue plan, which includes inviting bids from other health providers to use under-used space at the city hospital.

But Mr Bridge said moving Papworth there would be “wrong” and would make a relatively small dent in the budget deficit.

Commenting on the Government’s intervention in Papworth’s Cambridge move, a spokesman for the Department of Health said it wanted assurances around the affordability of the scheme and whether it represented value for money.

Mr Bridge, who has worked at the specialist heart and lung hospital for 25 years, said he hoped the Government would have all the information it needed within a month.

  • As someone who has heart disease I think I am in titled to an opinion. We don't like change and anyone who has been to Papworth is afraid that the Papworth spirit may disappear. I feel that if the majority of staff go to the new location that spirit will remain. The cardiac services at both Papworth and Addenbrookes are second to none and have been interconnected for years. The research that is done at Addenbrookes supported by the British Heart Foundation is essential. The AddenbrookesPapworth partnership should not be broken it is essential for the future of the treatment of heart disease.

  • What? Not another U-turn, surely? I'd like to know what Andrew Lansley (untl very recently Health Secretary) is thinking and doing. I guess we'd all like to know.

  • I too have experienced Papworth's excellent medical care and would like it to stay in Papworth, but it's not feasible to continue and, at the same time rebuild, so another site is preferable. Addenbrooke's site looks amazing as a plan, and is up to Papworth's standard, plus I don't have knowledge of Peterborough's hospital except for it's enormous debt, so that certainly doesn't sound a good alternative. Trust the government to back pedal at the last minute and throw a scalpel in the operation! Hope it moves to Cambridge and keeps it's historic name.

  • I attended Papworth with my husband only last Monday. We were very impressed with the care and attention he received. We know from friends' experience what a marvellous job they do. The hospital should be relocated to the Addenbrookes site as planned without any further delay. Further delay means higher costs which wastes money. Please Papworth get someone to start a petition so that this has to be discussed in Parliament. Hazel Marchant
