THOUSANDS of people turned out for St Neots charity dragon boat race on Saturday (August 31) to see 21 teams battle it out on the River Great Ouse.
Organisers are still counting the money raised on the day, which will go towards Dementia UK as well as charities supported by the Rotary Club of St Neots St Mary’s and the mayor of St Neots.
This was the first time the race had taken place at the Summer Festival, which also saw a fireworks display, a fair, a bar, food and a number of charity stalls on show.
The day of races, which saw the teams of 10 face off three at a time over a 200m stretch of the River Great Ouse, was a result of 18 months of planning by the town council, the rotary club and St Neots Dragon Boat Team.
The winning team on the day was That Sinking Feeling, representing Waitrose.
Ian Taylor, rotary club president, said: “It was amazing, the whole event has outstripped our expectation.
“The highlight of the day had to be watching the Rotary Pedalos team with an average age of around 50 come in ahead of St Neots Rowing Club.”
