SHOPPERS screamed as a car driving through St Ives town centre left the road and collided with two pedestrians.
Eyewitnesses described the terror as people were forced to jump out the way of the Honda vehicle when it careered towards shoppers in The Pavement before crashing into a shop, a sign and finally ending up colliding into bike racks outside The Golden Lion.
“A lot of people were screaming and crying and there some people stood outside who had to jump out of the way,” said Jennifer Armes, who watched the incident unfold at 1.37pm today (Thursday, September 20) just feet away from her as she stood opposite The Golden Lion.
“It was going faster and faster until it hit the bike racks. I thought he was going to keep going and hit me. It was terrifying.”
Afterwards shoppers who had heard the crash and people screaming came outside and stood to watch as the emergency services began the rescue operation.
Police said the pedestrians, who are both women, will be taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital but that their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
One of those knocked over was given advanced level care by Magpas paramedics after she suffered abdominal and chest injuries, as well as wounds to her leg.
The occupants of the vehicle, believed by eyewitnesses to be an elderly couple, were not injured but the female passenger was said to be stuck in the vehicle afterwards.
Toni Ashurst, who was on the second floor of St Ives Town Hall, said: “I heard a great noise and the screams from people outside. It was really scary.”

When people get to 70 they should be forced to have their abilities assessed by atleast a driving instructor to ensure they can cope with the traffic conditions on the roads today and are safe.My opinion on this is the vehicle was an automatic and the elderly driver got confused and nailed the throttle.Hopefully the DVLA will shred his licence.

Quite rightly so.You don't have to look very far to find one near you ,wherever you live.My step-father was one who was that stubborn, until he broadsided a car on a roundabout.Luckily no-one was injured but it ruined the other persons holiday.Luckily he then saw sense which was very unusual for him.

Apparently this bloke is in his nineties and could have had a stroke, tho workers at greggs reckon it looked like he had a fit. At that age you shouldn't be allowed to drive unless you can prove you are totally fit and capable. So many times I've read about old men who are too stubborn to relinquish their licences because they think theyre still safe.
