Firefighters were called to a home in Peterborough at 4.39pm to free the child who had become stuck in a plastic device.

The St Neots fire crew attended two false alarms, one at an automated fire alarm Prior Junior School, in Longsands Road, and another to a bonfire at Barford Road, Eynesbury, but no firefighting action was required.

The fire service was also called to other false alarms in Cambridge, Peterborough and Whittlesey.

Chris Strickland, deputy chief fire officer, said: “While our day-to-day services are severely disrupted by the strike, we were able to fulfil our legal duty to provide a fire and rescue service.

“Our thanks go out to the community for taking extra care this morning and putting safety at the forefront of their minds.”

Further strikes will take place tomorrow between 2pm and 2am on Sunday and another from 10am to 3pm on Sunday.
