A typing error on postal polling cards sent to hundreds of Huntingdonshire households will not affect people’s voting, says the district council.

Apparently conflicting statements regarding postal votes were included on the paperwork delivered ahead of next month’s district and European elections on May 22.

While one said “you will not receive a postal vote” another said “you will not be able to vote in a polling station”, apparently excluding the recipient from voting at all.

Concerned resident Stephen Martin, of Ramsey, raised the issue with Huntingdonshire District Council and was told a mistake had been made but that it would not be corrected.

“I stated that should the result of the election be contentious it could be argued that the local authority had mismanaged the election by misleading the electorate,” he said. “I don’t expect a local authority to make such a horrible howler.”

An HDC spokesman admitted an error had been made on some of the postal poll cards. She added: “The cards simply notify the recipient of the forthcoming elections – they do not in any way prevent people from voting – as the actual postal vote ballot papers are sent separately around May 8.”
