The leader of Huntingdonshire District Council has resigned from his role to focus on his position on the combined authority, The Hunts Post understands.

Councillor Robin Howe has stepped down from the position to “properly fulfil” his duties as deputy mayor of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority.

An e-mail sent to councillors by the district council’s managing director, Joanne Lancaster, seen by The Hunts Post, states: “This is a great opportunity for Huntingdonshire, ensuring influence at the highest level over the strategies and activities which will support growth across the area.”

Cllr Howe took up the post of leader in 2016 after Councillor Jason Ablewhite stepped down to become the county’s police and crime commissioner.

Cllr Howe was confirmed as deputy mayor at a meeting of the combined authority in June.

The e-mail added: “In the short term, Robin will delegate the running of the council to Councillor Graham Bull, who will provide continuity as the current appointed deputy leader.”

A new leader will be elected during an extraordinary meeting of the authority on July 26.
