A large crowd gathered on Saturday to witness the launch of the new name of St Ives’s quay.

The town centre, including Market Hill, The Quay, The Waits and the surrounding riverside area, will now be known as The Old Riverport as recognition as St Ives’s heritage of having one of the country’s busiest riverports.

It is hoped the new identity will boost retail in town as well as encourage people into the town as a leisure destination.

The St Ives Electric Riverboat Company also launched its new pontoon and leisure boat with St Ives Mayor Councillor Nick Dibben dowsing the boat in Champagne and cutting the ribbon to the pontoon.

There was also live music, boat rides and a riverport exhibition in the Bridge Chapel.

  • So, am I right when I say that people are being told that their address should include "The Old Riverport?" If they live in the named areas? I'm not exactly sure how or why this can happen? Also, the town council solely did all of this? Oh no, they would have had to jointly work with many other organisations to pull this pointless, high priced waste of public money!!!!!
