A driver accused of causing the deaths of two passengers in a crash near Ramsey has been remanded in custody after an appearance at Peterborough Crown Court.

Ionut-Cosmin Curut, 21, faces two charges of causing death by careless driving following an incident in which a silver Mazda 6 car left Puddock Road and ran into a waterway adjacent to the road.

Curut, of Sutton Road, Spalding, spoke only to confirm his identity when he made a brief appearance before Judge Sean Enright today (Friday).

He wore a grey sweatshirt and was assisted by a Romanian interpreter.

Currut is accused of causing the deaths of Ilze Dobele, 46, of New Road, Spalding, and Ingrida Dudeniene, 47, of Spring Gardens, Spalding, by careless driving on October 13.

The two women were back seat passengers in the Mazda when the car left the road at about 7.15am and went in to the water.

Curut and another man in the front of the car managed to escape and were taken to Hinchingbrooke Hospital with minor injuries.

Curut, who was driving, was arrested and appeared before magistrates at Peterborough the following day where he was remanded to Peterborough Crown Court.

He was remanded in custody and is expected to make a further appearance on January 12 and a trial could take place in April.
