Complaint after First Capital Connect redesigns Huntingdon Railway Station car park with fewer drop-off bays

A complaint has been made after a drop-off zone at Huntingdon Railway Station’s car park was moved during a redesign.
Contractors for First Capital Connect (FCC) resurfaced the car park on Sunday (June 22) and repainted the parking bays. The work included replacing the drop-off area outside the main entrance with an additional taxi queuing zone.
As part of the redesign, the number of dropping off bays has been cut from six to four. Staff parking has also been reinstated after being removed in 2011.
Roger Perkins, a spokesman for FCC, said the changes had been made due to complaints by passengers, including disabled motorists, about taxis spreading into the station car park and blocking parking spaces.
But station users were not convinced. Andrew Ford, of Keyston, wrote to The Hunts Post stating that he thought the new set-up would make dropping off more difficult.
He added: “It would seem that this has been done to allow even more taxis to queue. Would it not be preferable to restrict the number of waiting taxis and to move the excess taxis away from the station until such time as they can come into the site?”
FCC said the changes at Huntingdon mirrored other stations.
Mr Perkins said: “The new loop system is similar to those found at other stations which have proved popular and effective for traffic flow. The number of drop off bays have been reduced from six to four to maximise the number of parking spaces at the station, which is nearly always full.
“The staff car parking spaces were previously in place before the last re-lining work in 2011 and have been reinstated. There is ample capacity at Huntingdon across both sides of the station with 977 bays, the largest of any FCC car park.”
He added: “We made these changes in response to what passengers were telling us and the feedback we received Monday and Tuesday from station staff and passengers has actually been very positive.
“This exceptionally large resurfacing project was completed with minimal disruption to passengers despite the challenges of a 100 per cent occupancy car park and people are pleased with the result.”
