More than 1,000 calls from Cambridgeshire to the East of England Ambulance Service were logged over the holiday weekend.

The county clocked a total of 1,200 calls – 15 more than last year – compared to 1,142 in Suffolk and just 869 from Bedfordshire.

Elsewhere though, almost 3,000 calls came in from Essex, another 1,400 from Hertfordshire, and 1,454 from Norfolk – a grand total of almost 9,000 calls across the region.

Robert Morton, chief executive of the service, said: “Whilst many people in the East of England were enjoying an extended weekend, our managers, staff and volunteers were working hard to provide the best possible care to our patients.

“I’d like to pay tribute to them for their efforts and dedication on what was another busy weekend for the service.”

Over the weekend, April 30 was the service’s busiest, with more than 3,100 calls logged and 2,305 responses sent out.

Community first responders were also on hand, attending 358 medical emergencies.
