A kitten who was abandoned in a dog crate down a country road in Cambridgeshire is recovering well after needing an amputation due to having an open fracture on her leg.

Sweet Sunny, who is only three months old, was found on November 21 in a dog crate which had been left in Long Drove in Cottenham. There had been food and a litter tray left inside the crate.

When she was found, her right paw was mangled severely damaged and infected, and the finder took her to Village Vet Milton’s practice for urgent treatment.

She was given pain relief and medication and was then later transferred to the RSPCA Cambridge and District Branch’s clinic where vets had to amputate her leg as it was so badly infected it was not possible to fix her fracture.

Sunny is now being cared for by Flo Murphy, a client care assistant at Village Vet Milton, and she is doing remarkably well. Her treatment and care is being funded by the Cambridge and District Branch.

RSPCA animal rescue officer, Naomi Sadoff, said: “Poor Sunny was found down a lane in a dog crate with her poorly leg. We do not know how her injury was caused but the vets said it was badly infected.

“Thankfully she was found, and the member of the public took her straight to a vet and we are grateful for all their help.”

She added: “We are also so grateful to everyone involved in the rescue of Sunny. She is such a sweet friendly kitten and she had obviously been well socialised.

“I am so pleased to hear she is making such a good recovery and has a loving fosterer keeping her happy and safe.”

Naomi said the combined effects of the pandemic and the ongoing cost of living crisis has created a “perfect storm” meaning the RSPCA expects that more animals than ever will need their help this year.

"Abandonment calls to our emergency line are now at a three-year high, as we respond to an increasing number of animals being given up and dumped,” she said.

“Behind these shocking statistics are thousands of vulnerable animals. Each one is a valuable life in urgent need of our help.

“We’re desperately concerned about the coming winter months - abandonments have soared and many rescue centres are full to bursting, so we are facing a winter crisis.

“Our rescue teams are set to be busier than ever this Christmas so we need animal lovers to join the Christmas rescue and help us be there for animals as neglect and abandonment soars. "We’re asking supporters to join the Christmas rescue by donating to help rescue teams reach the thousands of animals who desperately need them.”
