The owners of an 11-year-old dog called Scrappy say is now back to his 'usual cheeky self' after some life-saving surgery.
Concerns were initially raised when Scrappy started to ignore his food and became extremely lethargic, so owner Davina Toofan, from Fenstanton, took him to Cromwell Vets in Huntingdon.
Scans, tests and exploratory surgery revealed he was suffering from pancreatitis and septic peritonitis.
Davina feared the worst and said: "At one point, we thought we may have to say goodbye."
However, Scrappy has since made a "remarkable recovery" and is back with Davina.
"He is like a different dog. He has double the energy and is back to his usual cheeky, playful self!"
Scrappy finally recovered after four days of hospitalisation and was allowed home, with his owners soon reporting he was eating and doing well.
A relieved Davina said Scrappy had made a "remarkable recovery" but admitted it was a traumatic experience as her prized pet fought to survive.
Davina said: "We were absolutely devastated, as we understood the severity of the situation and how quickly animals with the condition can deteriorate.
"We were very concerned and constantly on edge, especially in the 48 hours after the surgery.
"It was touch and go, and we were hoping and praying Scrappy would improve."
Davina paid tribute to the vets, vet nurses and non-clinical team at Cromwell Vets, adding: "Everyone was incredible. We couldn't have asked for more knowledgeable and compassionate staff.
"They are clearly so passionate about their work and helped us so much at such a difficult time.
"We were kept constantly updated on Scrappy and his condition, and they allowed us to visit Scrappy every day, so we were confident he was in the best hands.
"They saved our fur baby and made sure he came home to us, so we're extremely grateful."
