There is still no new date for the release of the proposed new route of the A14.

And the Highways Agency (HA) would not say what work is currently being carried out on the project.

A preferred route for the Ellington to Fen Ditton A14 improvement scheme was scheduled to be released before the end of last year, but was delayed in early December as the Government said it would not toll the new road.

A week later the HA published its report into the public consultation, setting out a revised timeline and delaying the first proper step of the project until early 2014.

The reason for the delay was never fully specified, except to adjust the plans to account for the loss of the tolling element. This was thought to be an ANPR system that would operate much like the congestion charge in central London.

The HA said this week that it was unable to pinpoint a time it will be ready to announce the route.

Officers would also not be drawn on whether the reduction of funds from tolling – some £300million – would mean a drastically altered, shortened or cheapened end result.

A HA spokesman said: “Unfortunately there isn’t anything else to say at this stage as the process to develop the design further, taking into account the consultation feedback, and to prepare for updating the public, key stakeholders, and the media, is following its course as planned.”
