Party Policies: District Council Elections 2008

The UK Independence Party

UKIP has a wide range of policies on both national and local issues.  We can promote policies that are radically different from the other parties because we want control of our affairs returned to the people, both nationally and locally.  We want to rid our country of bureaucracy and political correctness and give ordinary people a say in how their own local council should be run.

UKIP will work to take control of finance from central government and give it back to local councils. This will enable local councils to set sensible budgets that allows for the gradual reduction of council tax bills.  Local people should have a say in the proposed setting of council tax bills by way of public consultation.

UKIP would like to see more policemen/women return to proper policing duties to reduce crime and yobbish behaviour. Chief Constables should be elected.

Remove central government interference in education and return control to the professionals. Head Teachers to be given independence. Stop the sale of school and college playing fields.

UKIP would like local people to be able to call a binding referendum on any local issue that gets sufficient support.

Better public transport controlled locally. Eliminate speed cameras that do not reduce accidents. Rule out road pricing by satellite tracking and stop privatising parking restrictions.

Post Offices are the hub of the community in every village, town and city in the country and yet 2,500 of them are about to close. People should realise that it is the implementation of two EU Directives that is driving post office closures. We don't think that the European Union should be able to force hardship and stress on the millions of Britons.
