Party Policies: District Council Elections 2008

The Conservative Party

NEXT Thursday's district council elections should not be a verdict on Gordon Brown's Government but an endorsement of Conservative policies locally. Year on year our opponents throw as much mud as they can at us, yet in their hearts they have to admit that the Conservatives run a pretty good council.

At the centre of our success is our policy on Council Tax. For years we have managed the council's finances well while at the same time providing quality services. Conservatives recognise that it's your money we spend and therefore value for money is the key.

Our national slogan for this election is "Vote Blue, go Green". Locally the district council has an excellent record of environmentally-friendly policies. The weekly collection of blue, grey and green household wheelie bins is a great success with very positive feedback. Huntingdonshire is now one of the top ten recycling districts in the country.

We are supporting a low emissions policy by reducing car parking fees for season ticket holders, The council's new environmental strategy will address issues about carbon emissions and the future agenda on green issues throughout the district.

The economies in our market towns of Huntingdon, Ramsey, St Ives, St Neots and our larger villages are all thriving. We are not complacent, and are always working with town councils and other partners to improve shopping and recreational facilities.

Our rural way of life is under threat from a Government that does not know or care about rural communities. We have already fought to save Hinchingbrooke Hospital, and now our post offices.

We live in an area of growth. The best way of protecting our valuable services is to vote Conservative next Thursday.
